What Is Content Cohesion?
Content cohesion is how well the parts of your text hold together. Transition words — like "however", "therefore", "for example", and "first" — are the most visible cohesion signal: they tell readers and AI engines whether what follows is a contrast, a consequence, an example, or a sequence step. Linguists call them discourse markers, and NLP tools like Coh-Metrix score their frequency as a direct measure of text quality.
But cohesion is broader than transitions alone. Halliday and Hasan's foundational 1976 framework defined five types of cohesion: conjunction (transitions), reference (this, these, the above), substitution, ellipsis, and lexical cohesion (word repetition and synonyms). Together, they create the connective tissue that lets both humans and AI engines follow an argument. The Transition Words metric in your GEO-Score measures the most impactful type — conjunction — because it has the strongest effect on AI extraction accuracy.
